BSB50320 Diploma of Human Resource Management: Everything You Need to Know

The BSB50320 Diploma of Human Resource Management is a nationally recognised AQF Level 5 qualification for HR professionals with existing workplace experience. It covers performance management, employee relations, workforce planning, learning and development, business risk and WHS - the competencies expected of someone working at HR management level in Australia.

It is a well-recognised, nationally accredited qualification and one that appears regularly as a requirement or preference in HR Manager, HR Business Partner and People and Culture roles. This post covers everything you need to know before you enrol: what is in the course, how the units are structured, what you need to get in, and where the qualification can take you.

Who Should Study the Diploma of Human Resource Management?

This qualification is designed for people who are already working in HR or in a role with significant HR responsibilities. It is not an entry-level course. The content assumes you are familiar with how HR functions in practice, and it builds on that foundation to develop management-level skills.

You are likely a good fit if you are:

  • An HR Coordinator or HR Officer looking to move into a management role
  • An office or operations manager who has taken on HR responsibilities and wants a formal qualification to back your experience
  • A People and Culture professional looking to formalise and deepen your skill set
  • Someone who has completed the Certificate IV in Human Resource Management and is ready for the next step
  • A professional returning to the workforce in an HR capacity after time away
Real talk: If you are new to HR with no workplace experience in the field, the Diploma is likely to feel like a stretch. The HR Foundations course or Certificate IV in HRM is a better starting point - and both can count toward your entry into this Diploma.

What Are the Entry Requirements for the BSB50320 Diploma?

The Diploma is an AQF Level 5 qualification, and the entry requirements reflect that. There are two recognised pathways in.

1

Work Experience Pathway

At least 2 years of relevant work experience in an HR or related role. This could be as an HR Coordinator, HR Assistant, office manager with HR duties, payroll officer or similar. You do not need to have had "HR" in your job title. What matters is that your day-to-day work has included HR functions like recruitment, onboarding, performance conversations, employee relations or workplace compliance.

2

HR Foundations Course Pathway

Completion of the EBC HR Foundations course. This course is designed specifically as an alternative pathway into the Diploma for people who want to enter without the full 2 years of experience. It covers the foundational HR knowledge the Diploma builds on, and completing it satisfies the entry requirement in full.

If you are not sure which pathway applies to your situation, get in touch. It is a quick conversation and we can help you work it out before you enrol.

How is the BSB50320 Diploma Structured?

The Diploma is 12 units in total. Seven of those are core units that every student completes. They form the nationally consistent foundation of the qualification regardless of your background or the role you are heading toward. The remaining five are elective units you select from a structured menu of options.

The elective structure works like this:

  • At least 2 electives must come from Group A - HR-specific units
  • At least 2 electives must come from Group B - transferable business skills
  • The remaining 1 elective can come from either Group A or Group B, or from another Certificate IV, Diploma or Advanced Diploma qualification from any currently endorsed Training Package

The result is a qualification with a consistent, nationally recognised core, plus the flexibility to tailor your final units to your specific role or career direction. Whether you want to go deeper into specialist HR skills or round out your broader management capability, the elective structure supports both.

What Are the Core Units in the BSB50320?

These seven units are non-negotiable - every BSB50320 student completes them. Together, they cover the fundamental competencies expected of an HR professional operating at management level.

BSBHRM521 Facilitate Performance Development Processes

Covers the design and facilitation of performance review processes, goal-setting frameworks and individual development planning. This unit is as much about how to have effective performance conversations as it is about running a review cycle - a distinction that matters a great deal in practice.

BSBHRM522 Manage Employee and Industrial Relations

Covers the legal and practical landscape of employment relations in Australia - enterprise agreements, the Fair Work framework, dispute resolution and managing grievances. For any HR professional, this is foundational knowledge that underpins a significant portion of the day-to-day role.

BSBHRM523 Coordinate the Learning and Development of Teams and Individuals

Focuses on identifying learning needs, designing development plans and coordinating training initiatives across teams. This unit connects individual development to organisational capability - a skill set increasingly expected of HR professionals at all levels, not just L&D specialists.

BSBHRM524 Coordinate Workforce Plan Implementation

Covers workforce planning in practice - translating organisational strategy into workforce requirements, identifying capability gaps and coordinating the implementation of workforce plans. This unit sits squarely at the intersection of HR and business strategy.

BSBHRM527 Coordinate Human Resource Functions and Processes

A practical unit covering the coordination of HR policies, procedures and systems across an organisation. This includes maintaining HR documentation, supporting managers in applying HR processes and ensuring consistency in how HR practice is applied day to day.

BSBOPS504 Manage Business Risk

HR professionals do not work in isolation from business risk. People-related risks - compliance failures, workforce gaps, employee relations disputes - are among the most significant any organisation faces. This unit covers risk identification, assessment and mitigation frameworks with direct application to HR contexts.

BSBWHS411 Implement and Monitor WHS Policies, Procedures and Programs

Covers the implementation and monitoring of workplace health and safety policies in line with Australian WHS legislation. HR plays a central role in WHS compliance in most organisations, and this unit ensures graduates understand both the legal obligations and the practical steps involved in meeting them.

What Elective Units Are Available in the BSB50320?

You choose 5 elective units from the groups below. At least 2 must come from Group A and at least 2 from Group B. Here is what is available through EBC.

Group A - Human Resources (choose at least 2)

BSBHRM525 Manage Recruitment and Onboarding
Covers end-to-end recruitment - from developing position briefs and selecting sourcing strategies through to structured onboarding programs that actually set people up to succeed. A core unit for any HR professional involved in talent acquisition.

BSBHRM529 Coordinate Separation and Termination Processes
Covers the legally compliant management of resignations, redundancies and terminations. This is one of the more complex areas of HR practice from a compliance standpoint, and this unit builds a practical understanding of the obligations, documentation and process requirements involved.

BSBWHS521 Ensure a Safe Workplace for a Work Area
An advanced WHS unit that builds on the core BSBWHS411 - moving from policy implementation to taking direct responsibility for safety outcomes in a specific work area. Well suited to HR professionals who carry direct WHS accountability in their role.

Group B - Transferable Skills (choose at least 2)

BSBCMM511 Communicate with Influence
Covers the communication skills that underpin effective HR practice at a management level - presenting ideas to senior leadership, influencing without authority and adapting your communication style for different audiences and stakeholders.

BSBCRT511 Develop Critical Thinking in Others
Focuses on building critical thinking capacity within teams. Particularly relevant for HR professionals involved in learning and development or leadership development programs, where the goal is to lift capability across the organisation, not just solve individual problems.

BSBFIN501 Manage Budgets and Financial Plans
Covers the financial management skills needed to oversee HR budgets - workforce costs, training investment and resource planning. A practical unit for HR professionals who currently manage a budget or are working toward a role that does.

BSBLDR523 Lead and Manage Effective Workplace Relationships
Covers the leadership skills involved in building and maintaining productive working relationships across an organisation. This unit sits at the intersection of HR and leadership development, with direct application to culture, engagement and team dynamics.

BSBPEF501 Manage Personal and Professional Development
Focuses on self-directed professional development - setting goals, reflecting on practice and building a plan for ongoing growth. A strong choice for professionals who are actively managing their own career trajectory alongside their studies.

BSBPMG430 Undertake Project Work
Introduces project management fundamentals in a practical context. HR professionals regularly lead projects - implementing new systems, rolling out training programs, managing change initiatives - and this unit provides a structured framework for doing that well.

BSBTWK501 Lead Diversity and Inclusion
Covers the development and implementation of diversity and inclusion strategies in the workplace. As DEI becomes a standing agenda item for most organisations, this unit equips HR professionals to lead that work with confidence and a clear framework.

How to choose your electives: Think about where your current skill gaps are and where you want to be in two to three years. If you are moving toward a generalist HR Manager role, BSBHRM525, BSBLDR523 and BSBCMM511 are strong choices. If you are heading into a specialist or advisory direction, BSBCRT511, BSBFIN501 or BSBTWK501 add real value. Your EBC mentor can help you think through the right combination for your goals before you lock anything in.

What Career Outcomes Does the BSB50320 Diploma Support?

The BSB50320 is aligned with roles at the HR management and advisory level. Common job titles held by graduates include:

  • Human Resources Manager
  • HR Business Partner
  • People and Culture Advisor
  • HR Generalist (senior level)
  • Workforce Planning Advisor
  • Employee Relations Advisor

For a current picture of what these roles pay in the Australian market, Seek's salary insights tool is worth a look. Salary ranges vary by industry, location and experience, and the market moves - so rather than publishing figures here that could quickly become outdated, we'd rather point you to a live source.

What the Diploma does is remove a common barrier. Many HR Manager and HR Business Partner roles list a Diploma or equivalent as a requirement. If you have the experience but not the credential, this is often the piece that is holding the door closed.

How Does the BSB50320 Fit Into the HR Qualification Pathway?

The Diploma sits at AQF Level 5 - mid-tier in the HR qualification framework. Here is how it sits alongside the other qualifications in the HR pathway:

  • HR Foundations course - EBC's introductory pathway. Suitable for those new to HR, or those who need to meet the Diploma's entry requirement without 2 years of experience.
  • BSB40420 Certificate IV in Human Resource Management - AQF Level 4, covering the operational side of HR. A strong option for those building on a generalist base before stepping into the Diploma.
  • BSB50320 Diploma of Human Resource Management - AQF Level 5, management-level HR practice. This qualification.
  • BSB60320 Advanced Diploma of Human Resource Management - AQF Level 6, strategic and executive HR. The next step for those aiming at senior leadership roles.

One advantage of studying through EBC is that individual units are available separately. If you want to test a unit or two before committing to the full qualification, that option is there.

The course is self-paced, so you progress at a rate that suits your circumstances. EBC's recommended completion timeframe for the Diploma is 12 to 18 months. Your EBC mentor can help you map out a realistic study plan from the start based on how much time you have available each week.
